The Artist Studio was created about 14 years ago by Khun
Sumpoaw, the current partner and original owner of the gallery. Originally from Nakhon
Ratchasima (Korat), Khun Sumpoaw set up her small gallery in Pattaya and quickly became
established as a reliable source for high quality reproduction art ranging from Botticelli
to Andy Warhol. Soon, she became known as an excellent interpreter of the ideas her
customers brought her. As her reputation grew, local and national artists were drawn to
the studio as a place where creativity was encouraged, and where artists could, if they
wished, express themselves in original art.
As the community of artists grew, it soon became obvious that larger premises were needed. By then, Pattaya had become notorious for a range of attractions that included a myriad of copycat art shops producing low-quality copies for the tourist industry. With ambitions to break away from this crowded market, Khun Sumpoaw moved The Artist Studio lock stock and barrel to the island of Koh Samui in 1995. This move coincided with the entrance of an important figure in the life of Khun Sumpoaw - her future husband from the UK, Paul Conner. Mr. Conner, as a regular customer and friend of Sumpoaw, had seen the great potential of the studio and had the ability to provide an outlet and market for Thai artists who occasionally wish to break free from the constraints of the fickle tourist market. Paul wanted to give these artists the chance to create works of art that would normally only be produced under a patron who could provide them the facilities, and possibly the recognition, that Western artists might enjoy. Paul was convinced of the potential in promoting the studio to a wider audience, which eventually led the couple to set up shop here in Phuket. Today, that collaboration has allowed The Artist Studio to develop into an international business, supplying original as well as reproduction art, to customers and galleries around the world.
